download (1) Origin of South Carolina Gamecocks Team Nickname
The team name is held in honor of Thomas Sumter, a South Carolina Revolutionary Wr hero. Sumter was nicknamed the “Carolina Gamecock” after British General Banastre Tarleton said Sumter “fought like a gamecock.” A gamecock is a breed of rooster possessing physical and behavioral traits suitable for cockfighting.

Sumter was so nicknamed because he used fierce guerrilla warfare fighting style tactics against British soldiers after they burned down his house during the Revolution.

In 1900, the football team was first called the “Gamecocks” by The State newspaper referred to General Thomas Sumter fighting tactics and the team’s spirit.

download The Cocky Mascot
Cocky is the University of South Carolina costumed mascot representing a cartoon version of a gamecock.

Cocky debuted at the Homecoming game of 1980. Cocky was presented as Big Spur’s son. Big Spur was a large, gangly barn yard rooster that had been attending games since 1978 as a mascot of the university. While Big Spur was welcomed Cocky was not and booed off the field by students who thought he lacked dignity.

Heslowly  regained general accptance and by 1981 Cocky was invited to be the official mascot of the NCAA Baseball College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. And in 1986 he was chosen during a nationwide contest as America’s First “National Mascot.”

The Cocky mascot was redesigned in 1985, allowing more mobility and a kinder, nimble, cartoon-like character.

In 1986 Cocky was recognized with a Concurrent Resolution by the SC House of Representatives as “Goodwill Ambassador of the State of South Carolina,” and met with several American and foreicn dignitaries. He also visited terminally ill children and adults across the state.
